About us

Friends of the Earth Czech Republic - local organization Hnutí DUHA Olomouc - our teamFriends of the Earth Czech Republic (Hnutí DUHA) is one of the largest and best-known Czech non-governmental environmental organizations. We have been actively working for the protection of large carnivores since 1995 when wolves started returning to the Czech Carpathians (Beskydy Mts.).

Since 2002, we organize field monitoring of large carnivores in the Beskydy and Javorníky Mountains with the help of volunteers participating in the "Wolf Patrols". We also focus on raising public awareness, protecting wildlife corridors and habitats, and involving key interest groups (hunters, foresters, farmers) and the general public in large carnivore conservation. In these efforts, we cooperate with the Administration of Protected Landscape Area Beskydy and Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic.

In 2005, the "Lynx Patrols" were launched in the Bohemian Forest as a joint project with the Administration of Šumava PLA.

In recent year, the reports have been coming on regular wolf activity from other areas in the Czech Republic. The thriving German-Polish population has been expanding to border mountain areas of Krušné hory, Jeseníky, Krkonoše and Jizerské hory. A wolf pack was confirmed in the Ralsko area in 2014, followed by the Broumov pack two years later. We have, therefore, expanded our work to other locations too. Last winter season, we have been organizing large carnivore monitoring in 6 areas of the Czech Republic.

Our projects are supported by the Czech Ministry of the Environment, the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic, EEA and Norway Grants, the European Union from the START Danube Region Project Fund, the International Visegrad Fund, the Swiss-Czech Cooperation Programme through the Environmental Partnership, and other national and international sponsors.

Most important for our work, however, are the many small, individual donors who support our work with their regular contributions. Become a Friend of Large Carnivores and consider making a donation today. Thank you!

The project TRANSGREEN (DTP1-187-3.1-TRANSGREEN) is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme (DTP), Priority 3 - Better connected and energy responsible Danube region, Specific objective - Support environmentally-friendly and safe transport systems and balanced accessibility of urban and rural areas.
